Our Story
Kaz and Shaun first crossed paths while guiding on the world-renowned Milford Track in the heart of Fiordland National Park. Their shared experiences and deep connection to the natural world inspired them to create Silver Beech Outdoor Guides, where they seek to share their passion and expertise with adventurers from around the globe. Together, Kaz and Shaun strive to connect our guests with the breathtaking beauty of the natural world, fostering a spirit of adventure and appreciation for the great outdoors.

Kaz Kawasaki
Founder / General Manager
Originally from Japan and now proudly calling Aotearoa home, Kaz brings a deep passion for wild places, meaningful travel, and genuine human connection to every journey he leads. His outdoor journey has taken him across the globe — from the backcountry of British Columbia to the trails of the French Alps and the vast landscapes of Australia — before finding a lasting home in New Zealand.

With over two decade of guiding experience on Aotearoa’s most iconic tracks — including nearly 200 crossings of the Milford Track — Kaz founded Silver Beech Outdoors to offer a more personal, soulful kind of adventure.

Known for his eye for detail, calm presence in any conditions, and love of good conversation (and even better coffee), Kaz ensures every trip is both seamless and memorable. He believes the outdoors has the power to restore and reconnect — and he’s happiest when helping others experience that magic for themselves.
Shaun Shallish
Co-Founder / Operations Manager
Shaun is equal parts high-country rascal and alpine sage. With countless days guiding the Milford Track and other remote trails, he’s the kind of leader whose grin gets guests through hailstorms—and whose quiet insight makes the land feel personal. Laughter tends to follow him down the path, but so does meaning.
