Through ancient forest to Fiordland’s alpine wetlands
Discover Fiordland’s alpine beauty on a private guided Key Summit day walk from Queenstown or Te Anau. Follow part of the renowned Routeburn Track through moss-covered beech forest to a landscape of alpine wetlands, reflective tarns and sweeping mountain views. With around three hours of walking, this rewarding hike offers a memorable introduction to Fiordland National Park, with private transport, expert guiding and a fresh trail lunch included.
Experience a remarkable variety of landscapes on the Key Summit Scenic Walk, one of Fiordland’s most rewarding shorter alpine hikes. Beginning at The Divide on the Milford Road, your walk follows the Routeburn Track through native beech forest, where mosses soften the forest floor and ferns flourish beneath the canopy.
The track climbs steadily before branching towards Key Summit. As the forest thins, mountain views begin to unfold, and the trail leads into an open landscape of tussock, alpine wetlands and small tarns. The transition from sheltered forest to open alpine terrain is a highlight in itself, revealing how much the natural world can change over a relatively short distance.
At the top, explore the alpine nature trail and take in views across the Hollyford Valley and the surrounding Humboldt and Darran mountains. On a clear day, the Lake Marian lookout offers a glimpse into a dramatic glacial basin framed by steep peaks. There is time to pause, enjoy your trail lunch and appreciate the colours, textures and reflections of this distinctive mountain environment.
Your private guide brings the walk to life through local knowledge and stories, helping you notice the plants, landforms and smaller details along the way. A comfortable pace and time for stops make the journey as enjoyable as the views from the top.
Return along the same track through the beech forest before your private transfer back to Te Anau or Queenstown. With around three hours on foot, Key Summit is an excellent choice for travellers seeking varied scenery and an alpine experience within a shorter walk.
A great choice for guests looking for a scenic, well-paced adventure that delivers Fiordland’s grandeur in just a few hours.
