Explore Stewart Island/Rakiura on a private three-day journey from Queenstown. Walk the coastal forest around Golden Bay, follow the Rakiura Track to Māori Beach and discover the birdlife of Ulva Island. After dark, head out in search of wild kiwi.
Your journey begins with a drive south to Invercargill and a ferry or flight to Stewart Island/Rakiura. Once in Oban, stretch your legs on the Golden Bay Track, where native forest opens to views across Paterson Inlet. As evening falls, join your guide for a chance to spot kiwi in the wild.
The following day takes you deeper into Rakiura National Park. Walk from Lee Bay along the coast to Māori Beach, where the quiet shoreline and remnants of a former sawmilling settlement tell part of the island’s story. A second evening offers another opportunity to look for kiwi, with an early morning outing also possible if conditions suit.
On your final morning, cross to Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara. Your guide will help you discover its protected forest and remarkable native birdlife before you leave Stewart Island in the afternoon and return to Queenstown. Travel to and from the island may be by ferry or flight, depending on conditions and availability, with no difference in the trip price.
Kiwi spotting:An outing is planned for the first night, with the second night available for another attempt. An optional early morning outing can also be considered if conditions and timing suit. As kiwi are wild animals, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Island transfers: Travel to and from Stewart Island may be by ferry or flight, depending on conditions and availability. There is no difference in the trip price.
For travellers who want to experience Rakiura beyond Oban: three distinct walks, time on Ulva Island and the chance to search for wild kiwi, all woven into a private three-day escape.
