Follow an alpine river into the heart of the Routeburn valley

Discover one of New Zealand’s iconic Great Walks on a private guided Routeburn Track day walk from Queenstown or Glenorchy. Follow the crystal-clear Route Burn through native beech forest to Routeburn Flats, where open grasslands lie beneath the Humboldt Mountains. With private transport, expert guiding and a fresh trail lunch included, enjoy an unhurried introduction to Mount Aspiring National Park, with the option to continue to Routeburn Falls Hut for a longer mountain day.

Your day begins with a scenic journey to the Routeburn Shelter near Glenorchy, the starting point for your walk into Mount Aspiring National Park. From here, the Routeburn Track leads beneath a canopy of native beech trees, crossing swing bridges above clear alpine water and revealing a rich landscape of mosses, ferns and forest streams.

The river is a constant companion as you travel deeper into the valley. Pause beside rushing water, listen for birdsong and notice the changing light through the trees. Your private guide shares local knowledge and stories along the way, helping you connect with the natural world and appreciate more of what you see, hear and feel.

At Routeburn Flats, the forest opens into broad grasslands framed by the Humboldt Mountains. The contrast between the sheltered woodland and the spacious valley makes this a memorable destination in its own right. Enjoy your trail lunch, take photographs and spend time absorbing the surroundings before returning along the same track.

For guests seeking a longer day, an optional climb to Routeburn Falls Hut adds a different perspective. The trail rises above the flats towards cascading waterfalls and expansive views back across the valley, rewarding the additional effort with a stronger sense of the alpine landscape.

This extension brings the return walk to approximately 20 km, with around 500 m of elevation gain; allow 7–8 hours including breaks. Your guide will assess its suitability based on your group’s fitness and pace, alongside weather and track conditions.

Whether you finish at Routeburn Flats or continue towards the falls, private guiding gives you the flexibility to enjoy the journey at a pace that suits your group, with time to discover the details that make this celebrated valley special.

Perfect for anyone who enjoys native forest, clear alpine rivers, and mountain scenery. Private guiding gives you time to connect with the landscape at your own pace, with the option to extend your adventure to Routeburn Falls Hut.
