New Zealand's
The Most Beautiful Road

A scenic drive along one of New Zealand’s most beautiful roads

A dramatic alpine basin carved by ice and surrounded by towering granite faces

This private day walk takes you deep into Fiordland’s raw high country — across riverbeds, past waterfalls, and up into an elevated saddle overlooking Milford Sound. A landscape defined by scale, stillness, and awe.

Journey from Queenstown or Te Anau along one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking alpine highways — the Milford Road. As you travel through Fiordland’s glacier-carved valleys and towering peaks, each bend reveals a new panorama of rugged mountains, waterfalls, and mirror-like lakes.

At the trailhead of the Gertrude Saddle Route, lace up your boots for a demanding yet unforgettable adventure. The 8.4 km return hike climbs steeply through a wild alpine valley, crossing rock slabs and boulder fields as dramatic peaks rise on every side. With a 663 m elevation gain, this track is best suited for confident, experienced hikers — but the reward is extraordinary.

At the saddle, pause to take in one of the South Island’s most jaw-dropping views — a direct window toward Milford Sound and the Tasman Sea, framed by Fiordland’s granite walls. Enjoy lunch surrounded by sheer alpine grandeur before descending the same route back down the valley.

As you return along the Milford Road toward Te Anau or Queenstown, the day’s adventure lingers — a mix of exhilaration, challenge, and awe in one of Aotearoa’s most spectacular landscapes.

This experience is ideal for those seeking a true alpine day — meaningful terrain, big scale, and the quiet satisfaction of reaching a high place on foot. Come walk into Fiordland’s granite heart and see its landscape the way guides and mountaineers do.
