Rob Roy Glacier Day Walk
The Rob Roy Glacier Track is a classic South Island day walk — a beautiful trail through beech forest and river terraces leading to an elevated viewpoint opposite the Rob Roy hanging glacier. It’s a gentle, immersive way to experience the energy and scale of the Southern Alps without technical terrain.
Begin the day with a scenic drive up the Matukituki Valley, following braided rivers into open alpine country. The trail begins softly along the valley floor, crossing a suspension bridge before a steady, shaded climb through lush beech forest. As the trees thin, the landscape opens — cliffs, waterfalls, and the blue-white ice of Rob Roy Glacier framed overhead.
At the viewpoint, there is time to rest and take in the scale of the cirque — flowing ice, shifting light, and the sound of waterfalls. After lunch at the viewpoint, return along the same track and travel back to Wānaka or Queenstown in the afternoon.
This is a beautiful, approachable mountain walk — rewarding, scenic, and unhurried. Ideal for those who want meaningful landscapes without needing a full alpine climb.
